楊文英教授介紹了2型糖尿病流行現狀及東西方差異。她指出，糖尿病迅猛流行勢不可擋，尤其在亞洲，隨著城市化進程帶來的生活方式改變，糖尿病患病率迅速增加。而且，與西方人群相比，亞洲2型糖尿病患者有其自身特點：①發病更早，30~40歲人群發病率較高，且大多數患者為45~64歲；②β細胞功能受損更早且更嚴重；③總體肥胖率較低但腹型肥胖不容忽視。根據這些特點，對亞洲2型糖尿病患者的治療也應強調個體化，針對其發病早，以β細胞功能受損為主的病生理特點，選擇合理的治療方式。
Global projections for the diabetes epidemic are estimated to increase from 285 million to 438 million people worldwide within the next 20 years; a remarkable 65% increase. In addition, a rapidly growing prevalence of type 2 diabetes is evident within the different continent. Professor Yang will address several factors that are associated with the impact of global obesity and the type 2 diabetes epidemic in different populations. First, epidemiology and environmental change, the impact of diet and reduced physical activity because of changing occupations and urbanisation will be explored. Secondly, the effects of insulin secretory defects and the ethnic differences between insulin resistance and genetic susceptibility to type 2 diabetes will be considered for the need of primary prevention.
